On Republic Day, Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel announced that unemployment allowance would be provided to youths who don’t have jobs in the state. “I announce to provide unemployment allowance per month to all the unemployed youth of the state starting from the next fiscal year,” Baghel tweeted.
It was one of the election promises made by the Congress during the 2018 election campaign.
The party has mentioned in its manifesto that Rs. 2,500 per month would be given to the unemployed youth of the state. The state has announced it when elections were due during the end of the year.
Sources told ET that the government is currently working on the criteria, amount and budgetary allocation for the scheme and a detailed announcement would be made in the upcoming state budget later this month.
Government officials are also studying the Rajasthan model of unemployment allowance. The Rajasthan government has been giving unemployment allowances since 2019 under the ‘Mukhyamantri Yuva Sambal Yojna’.
Chhattisgarh has a debt of 26.2% of the state GDP.
